Bütgenbach is situated in the Belgian Eifel, in the region "Hohes Venn". In 1237, the lords of Limburg had Bütgenbach Castle built to the north of the village on a rocky outcrop on the banks of the River Warche. Bütgenbach thus became the centre of an area known as Hof Bütgenbach.
