IML-IVV CUP | Highlights

In the Algarve / Portugal the international hiking event will take place for the first time in March 2021 as part of the IML/IVV CUP. Selected hikes in varied and blooming nature await you...

Wide sandy beaches, sleepy fishing villages, hidden bays and rugged rock formations - the southernmost region of Portugal not only attracts with scenic highlights. But also with a lot of sun, namely with 300 sunny days a year. This makes the Algarve the sunniest place in Europe and the perfect destination for extraordinary hikes.

Day 01 | Arrival03 March

Your arrival will be individual. We are happy to offer you an optional flight to Faro Airport from all available departure airports. On your transfer to Quarteira you will get a first impression of the beautiful landscape in the south of Portugal. Your hotel awaits you and is open and cordial. B&B

Quarteira - with its exposed location, this small town is the ideal starting point for eventful hikes. Situated directly at the sea, it is the starting point for hikes along the coastline, into the mountainous hinterland or into wide nature reserves. The beach of Quarteira is one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire Central Algarve. The extensive promenade on the fine-grained sandy beach offers the ideal backdrop for fantastic sunsets. Quarteira is the ideal place for enjoyable evenings far away from the usual tourist hype.

Day 02 | Hike in the Ria Formosa Nature Reservation04 March

Your english-speaking guide is already waiting for you for the trip to Faro Island. The transfer takes you along the coast which is well worth seeing. You can look forward to a hike in the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, one of the most impressive regions of the Algarve, not only because of its diverse landscape, but also because of its unique location. It is a unique lagoon system, which is subject to constant change through continuous movement by wind, currents and tides. As a paradise for birds, the Ria Formosa is classified as IBA (Important Bird Area) and is part of the Natura 2000 network, regularly hosting more than 20,000 birds during the winter, it is a very important resting place for migratory birds that migrate between Northern Europe and Africa. The ever-changing landscape provides shelter for rare birds such as the purple grouse, the symbol of the nature park, and colourful flamingos.

There is much more to discover in this protected area, rich in nature and culture, on its 11km walk. Time flies. After her return to the hotel in Quarteira in the afternoon, one of the small restaurants invites you for a sundowner and dinner. Nowhere is the prepared fish better than here directly at the sea! B&B

Day 03 | Discover Silves - Hike around Monchique05 March

Today you will visit the villages of Silves and Monchique, places full of charm, tradition and history.

Silves is the former historical capital of the Algarve and beautiful. Under the rule of the Moors (9th-12th century) Silves was a large defensive fortification and an important commercial centre. Today Silves is a quiet city. However, the remnants of this illustrious past are still visible everywhere. These include the impressive red brick castle, the impenetrable city walls and the Gothic cathedral, built on the remains of a magnificent mosque. The city offers a genuine Portuguese atmosphere with its street cafés, cobblestone streets and relaxed lifestyle. The city is idyllically situated on the banks of the leisurely flowing Arade River, amidst the rolling hills of the Algarve.

Monchique is completely different. Monchique - not just a small town but a whole region with wooded hills, fragrant orchards and natural springs - the area around the small town of Monchique invites you to put everyday life aside and enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the rural Algarve. Located in the Serra de Monchique mountain range, which separates the Algarve from the neighbouring Alentejo region, this lush landscape of rolling hills, dense forests and flowing streams is called the "Garden of the Algarve". The area invites you to take nature walks and has hiking trails that take you through very small villages, past cork oaks, chestnut trees and pine trees and up to the granite rocks and bushes of the higher regions. Walking up to Fóia, the highest peak in the Algarve at 902 metres, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the south coast, which extends to Sagres.

The village of Monchique itself is situated between the peaks of Fóia and Picota. It is a charming hillside village with steep cobbled streets and whitewashed houses. Here, time seems to refuse to strike at the busy, bustling pace of the world. The restaurant "La Charette" welcomes you in a lovingly friendly way, situated in the shade of some trees in the city. Food and drink keep body and soul together, so they say. Well, the truth is, it tastes fantastic in this original atmosphere of the restaurant. And one would like to stay longer, but the return trip to Quarteira is already waiting. The rest of the day you spend at your own pace. B&B

Day 04 | IML / IVV Cup - Walking Festival Ameixial06 March

Your transfer is ready for the journey to Ameixial! And you're in! Welcome to the 1st IML/IVV Cup and the Ameixal Walking Festival 2021! Individual participation.

Ameixial is a village in the north of the Algarve, not far from the border to the Alentejo region. It is situated on the once most important connection between Lisbon and Faro. In the village, the rustic stone houses with their own style are particularly striking. Cafés, restaurants, grocery stores and even a petrol station can be found there. Of course there is also a stately church. On the benches and squares you will find the mostly elderly village population gossiping and the rather rare tourist eyes.

The Ameixial Walking Festival takes place in this tranquil mountain world every year. Designated paths lead through a beautiful, varied landscape. The view wanders over the hilly country into the distance and catches gnarled trees behind the next bend. Lizards lie in the warming March sun on the stones by the wayside and are far from being disturbed by hikers. It is the lush green of the meadows and the blooming of the wild flowers, the splashing of the numerous watercourses, which give always new, delightful impressions.

Perhaps you have already made friends with one of your Portuguese hosts during one of the hikes. At the Hikers' meeting place, the meeting point for all hikers, there is the opportunity to further deepen this with a hearty beer or local wine. In the early evening you will return to your hotel with your Tarnsfer. B&F

Day 06 | Coastal hike08 March

Your bus and English-speaking guide is already waiting for you for the transfer to today's program.

Sand cliffs glistening in the sun, mysterious sinkholes, eternally green pines, mastic bushes and the shimmering Atlantic Ocean. A combination that never ceases to amaze hikers above the cliffs near Lagoa, evoking the thought: a paradise on earth! It is here, in this heavenly spot on earth, that the 5.6 km long hiking route starts, which leads along above the sand cliffs of Praia da Marinha. There and back almost 12 km of unique nature, fantastic views and lots of aha-experiences!

The route owes its name "Vales Suspensos" (Hanging Valleys) to the seven watercourses that interrupt the rocky coast and have formed the valleys over the years. The waters of the Atlantic Ocean, which are so clear here that the seabed is clearly visible, also contributed to the shaping of the coast. The rolling of the waves carved out caves, created arches, formed dolines and lexoes that take your breath away and illustrate the unbridled power of nature. The transfer brings you back to the hotel. Enjoy the rest of the day at your own pace. B&B

Day 07 | Querenca / The Seven Springs Trail / Discover Loule09 March

Your bus and English-speaking guide is already waiting for you for the transfer to today's program.

One of the most typical villages of the Algarve is Querença. From the whitewashed houses and the filigree chimneys you can immediately see how strongly the Moors influenced the architectural style of the Algarve even in the mountainous hinterland. In Querença, it has been possible to authentically preserve the traditional life in the countryside and to save it into the present day. The village of Querença is famous for its traditions and is considered to be pleasantly decelerating.

In this area, which is appreciated for its delicious, original cuisine, which the local restaurants still prepare authentically today, the most famous medronho brandies are distilled and the best chouriço is produced, along with many other typical regional products.

The Seven Springs Trail takes its name from the 7 springs and fountains of the region. One reaches the sometimes somewhat hidden waters on a scenic and varied trail. The springs and caves of Benémola are located in the mountainous hinterland of the Algarve, about 10 km north of the town of Loulé near Querença. The scenically very beautiful area (390 ha) has been under nature protection since 1991. Beside the typical plants of the mountainous region like rosemary, lavender, rock roses and strawberry bushes (medronho) you will find many wild growing orchids.

Loulé, the enchanting small town in the hinterland of the Algarve is more than just a tourist destination. Loulé's avenidas and squares seem spacious, almost metropolitan. But the city has only 20.000 inhabitants. The oldtown centre is romantically twisted. The most lively places are the "Praça da República" and the street "Avenida José Costa Mealha". The street "Rua 5 de Outubro" is the pedestrian zone of Loulé.

According to tradition, the name Loulé is derived from the Roman laurel tree (laurus) that stood in the castle of Loulé. It could also be that it is derived from the Arabic word for "the higher" - "al-ulyá". Spend the afternoon discovering small squares, winding alleys and enchanting views.

Most of the sights are just a short walk away from the remains of the Moorish castle - now a museum - and the thirteenth century Gothic church "Igreja Matriz".

The Algarve is not necessarily associated with wine anabu. And yet the region is one of the leading growing areas. The Algarve is primarily a red wine region. The region's red wines are mainly made from local grape varieties such as Aragonez, Castelao, Negra Mole, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira.

You can convince yourself of the quality of the wines and the skill of the winemakers by visiting one of the hip wineries on your way back to the hotel. B&F

Day 08 | Departure10 March

Farewell is near. The Algarve has shown itself from its many sides and left a deep impression. Beautiful landscape, green hills, original villages, lovely places and friendly people!
